St. Mary’s High School is committed to a policy of inclusion: one in which the teaching, learning, achievements, attitudes and well-being of all children matter- including those identified as having various barriers to learning and achievement, both academic and Non-academic. Taking into consideration, the constraints of the school’s aims, its environment and entrance procedures, the school can support students with mild learning disabilities.
The main aim is that every student with or without challenges will reach their full potential in school and can make a successful transition to adulthood and the world of further and higher education training or work.
The support and intervention is organised into two departments who work closely together as students can have both academic and non-academic challenges. The department is staffed with experienced and qualified professionals including a professional counsellor.
Pastoral Support
The focus is on the non-academic side of challenges which are barriers to success. These include behaviour, attitude, attendance, punctuality, student’s wellbeing as well as career guidance. Students will receive support from the Head of Pastoral, School Councillor and Behaviour Assistant.
Inclusion
The focus is on students who are below or well below the expected academic level. Students will receive support from the Inclusion Coordinator, SEN teacher and Learning Support Assistants.
Guidance and Counselling
As counselors at SMR, we play a central role in fostering communication between home, school and community. We focus on the individual well-being of our students who are in need of a short term support, as it relates to their social, emotional and academic development. This includes helping students with decision making, effective communication and self-management skills. We use a proactive approach to support every child in the school.
